This past Friday, I took the bus in Kansas City for the first time. Let me just say that I will always remember my first experience.
I parked my car at United Way and walked down to the bus stop. There was this old women sitting there with a coat and an ear wrap. The first thing that she said to me was that it was cold out there. I agreed that it was a little chilly. She went on to inform me that she lived in the high rise across the street for low income elderly. I said kewl, how do you like it, I asked. She said that it was very nice but that is because she keeps her apartment clean unlike the others that live there. I said, oh I see.
The little old lady, lets call her Thelma. She looked like a Thelma. Thelma went on to tell me that she had a busy day planned. She had to go to Price Chopper and the bank. I asked where there was a Price Chopper. Thelma informed me that there was a Price Chopper on Independence Avenue and that the Cosentino's downtown was just way to expensive. Thelma went on to tell me that she was taking care of her business that day and that she had taken care of her sisters the day before. I made the mistake of asking Thelma if she drove in which she was quick to inform me that she did not own a car.
Thelma then went on to tell me about her sister and that the sister had a rocky marriage. Thelma said that she would always kick the guy out either by throwing his stuff in the bath tub or on the porch. Thelma indicated that the police would have taken the kids one if she would not have been there. I said oh, I see.
Thelma went on to talk even more about his sister. As it would turn out her sister lived in the same apartment high rise that she did. Let's call Thelma's sister Alice. Thelma informed me that Alice was gaining weight and her doctor was getting mad at Alice for doing it. Thelma even offered to walk with Alice but Alice refused.
Thelma then made a comment about someone who lives in the high rise. This guy asked her to pick him up some cigarettes. Thelma told him no because he is on oxygen and that no one on oxygen should be smoking, not that she had anything against people who smoke. Thelma said that he can buy is own cigarettes. Thelma also reported that this guy goes to the boat a lot.
The bus came and we both got up and got on the bus. My visit with this stranger was over. As I chuckled to myself I thought how interesting that it was that this total stranger decided to share a bit of her life with me and I didn't get a word in edge wise. Oh well, maybe I will run into her again. I will keep you posted.
